Wednesday 28th November saw The Johnson Foundation host the second Great Wirral Conversation in partnership with Young Chamber and Age UK Wirral. This time round we welcomed a group of year 8 students from Birkenhead High School Academy along with a group of ladies from Age UK Wirral. The inter-generational topic of conversation this time – ‘can women have it all?’
The ladies from Age UK Wirral introduced themselves as ‘experienced’ rather than old and explained to the students how career opportunities in their day were limited once they left school. The students were amazed to hear once a woman announced she was engaged to be married she had to give up her job to become a full time housewife! The ladies enjoyed hearing all about the students aspirations to become doctors, lawyers and scientists to name but a few. At the end of the Conversation, both groups agreed that there were so many career and education opportunities today. With so many advances in technology, being part of today’s world made everything so exciting.
On the way back in the mini bus the students asked if they could come back tomorrow and spend time with the ladies again. Vera from Wirral Age UK said it had been a privilege to have the chance to spend time in the student’s company.
The team here at the Foundation are certainly looking forward to the next Conversation.
